THERMO PLASTIC POWDER COATING & DIPPING

Fluidised bed dipping – also known as thermoplastic powder dipping – is one of the earliest plastic coating methods, dating back to when Plastic Coatings was founded in 1952. In this process, thermoplastic material is ground into a fine powder and placed in a steel container called a fluid bed. This container is open at the top and fitted with a fine mesh at the base, which prevents the powder from falling through. Air is forced upward through the mesh, causing the powder to become suspended and behave like a liquid – hence the term “fluidised bed.” Before coating, metal components are typically cleaned and prepared through degreasing and shot blasting. They are then heated to temperatures ranging from 250°C to 400°C, depending on the specific coating requirements, and immersed into the fluidised powder. Upon contact, the powder melts and fuses to the surface, creating a smooth, even coating. Once cooled, the thermoplastic forms a thick, flexible layer that provides excellent protection.

It is suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications and offers long-lasting resistance to corrosion, chemicals, UV exposure, and harsh weather conditions, while requiring minimal maintenance. Common materials used in this process include low-density polyethylene (LDPE), PPA®, Talisman®, Deconyl® Nylon 11 (Rilsan®), and Vyflex® PVC. Additionally, coatings can be supplied in a full range of RAL colours to meet specific aesthetic needs.
